What Is CBG? Meet the "Mother Cannabinoid"
As interest in cannabinoids continues to grow, many people are familiar with CBD and THC. But there's another cannabinoid gaining attention for its unique role in the cannabis plant: CBG.
Short for cannabigerol, CBG is often referred to as the "mother cannabinoid" because many other cannabinoids begin their life cycle as CBG.
At Fingerboard Farm, we're excited to dedicate a portion of this year's crop to CBG-focused genetics as we continue exploring the incredible diversity these plants have to offer.
Why Is CBG Called the Mother Cannabinoid?
During the early stages of a cannabis plant's development, it produces a compound called CBGA (cannabigerolic acid).
As the plant matures, enzymes naturally convert CBGA into other cannabinoid acids, including:
• CBDA (which becomes CBD)
• THCA (which becomes THC)
• CBCA (which becomes CBC)
Because so much of the plant's CBGA is converted into other cannabinoids, mature cannabis plants often contain only small amounts of CBG.
Specialized CBG genetics are bred to preserve higher levels of this cannabinoid, allowing growers to cultivate plants specifically for CBG production.
What Makes CBG Different?
Like other cannabinoids, CBG interacts with the body's endocannabinoid system, a complex network involved in maintaining balance throughout the body.
Many consumers describe incorporating CBG into their wellness routines when seeking products that support focus, clarity, and overall balance. While research is still ongoing, interest in CBG has grown significantly over the past several years as scientists continue to explore its potential.
One of the most exciting aspects of CBG is how it works alongside other naturally occurring cannabinoids and plant compounds, contributing to what is often called the "entourage effect."
Growing CBG at Fingerboard Farm
This season marks our eighth year cultivating cannabinoid-rich plants at Fingerboard Farm, and we're thrilled to be introducing new CBG-focused genetics into our fields.
When selecting new varieties, we look for more than cannabinoid content. We prioritize vigor, consistency, resilience, and overall plant health to ensure every crop meets our standards.
From the moment a seed is planted in our nursery to the day it is harvested, every plant receives careful attention from our cultivation team.
For us, quality starts long before extraction or formulation. It begins with thoughtful genetics, healthy soil, and a commitment to sustainable growing practices.
Why We're Excited About CBG
The cannabis plant continues to reveal new possibilities with every growing season.
As researchers learn more about the hundreds of naturally occurring compounds found within cannabis, cannabinoids like CBG are helping expand the conversation beyond CBD and THC alone.
We believe cannabinoid diversity matters. By cultivating a wider range of genetics and cannabinoid profiles, we're able to create innovative products that reflect both the complexity of the plant and the needs of our customers.
Looking Ahead
This year's CBG crop represents another step forward in our commitment to quality agriculture and plant-based wellness.
We're excited to watch these seedlings grow throughout the season and look forward to sharing the products they inspire in the months ahead.
After all, every new season starts the same way: one seed, endless possibilities, and a passion for growing something meaningful.
